Freely Given

The National Council for Voluntary Organisations defines Volunteering as  “any activity that involves spending time, unpaid, doing something that aims to benefit the environment or someone (individuals or groups) other than, or in addition to, close relatives. Central to this definition is the fact that volunteering must be a choice freely made by each individual.”

The West Somerset Railway could not function without the 1000 plus volunteers who freely give their time and talent to the railway.  Modern regulations mean that volunteers working on the railway must now be registered directly with the WSR PLC who hold responsibility for the safety of the operational railway.

The WSRA also needs volunteers for its fundraising and community engagement activities and would love to hear from anyone interested in helping with those activities, including our major fundraiser, the annual steam rally.

Volunteer on the Railway

A huge variety of roles are needed to ensure  the operational railway functions safely on a day to day basis and all visitors are welcomed to the railway.

The stations need gardeners, a range of customer service and catering skills, as well as some operational skills for which training will be given.

On the trains volunteers are needed to fire and drive the locomotives, as well as sell and inspect tickets, staff the buffets and of course Guard the trains.  Some training is required and will be given for each of these roles.

There are also roles in signaling and in maintenance of locomotives, carriages, track and infrastructure.

If you would like to know more about volunteering on the operational railway please visit the WSR PLC website for more information and how to apply.
