WSR Stations
The WSR stations are where the connections to the local community begin. Each station has a volunteer work force keeping the station running and presentable with a variety of skills and experience including gardening, catering, general maintenance and fundraising.
These groups are friendly local volunteers who enjoy their time on the railway and use their abilities to give back to the community.
Why not become a volunteer and join the team at your local WSR station? You could make new friends, learn new skills (or pass your skills on to others) and have the satisfaction of making a lasting contribution.

Minehead Station
Minehead Station was first opened in 1874 when the Railway was extended to the town from Watchet. The original station building has been extended several times. The former parcels office now houses the retail outlet “Buffer Stop Shop”.
The current turntable was installed in 2008 in roughly the same spot as two earlier and long-lost examples.
The station is the headquarters of the present Railway Company.
The platforms are probably the longest on any heritage railway and the main platform can accommodate a sixteen coach train plus a locomotive, with the bay platform not far behind with space for a twelve coach train.
Minehead Station is cared for by the Friends of Minehead Station whose income stream is from their ‘Readers Halt’ bookstall situated beneath the canopy between Platform 1 and 2.

Blue Anchor Station
When Blue Anchor Station opened in 1874 it had only one platform, now the up side. The main station building, the only structure here when the line opened, is completely different in design from those at Washford and Dunster. In 1904 the GWR added the passing loop, down platform and waiting room, signal box and level crossing gates.
The up platform is stone faced and the downside brick faced. Both were lengthened, together with the passing loop towards Taunton in 1934. The odd shape of the ladies room, built in red brick in 1904, is because it follows the boundary of the site. The waiting shelter between the main building and the ladies room, constructed in 1989, replaced an earlier one that rotted and became so dangerous it had to be demolished. The waiting room and booking office have been lovingly restored, using Great Western fittings, many of them originals to the station.
The Blue Anchor Railway Museum, opened in 1986 and run by the West Somerset Railway Heritage Trust, is on the down platform at Blue Anchor Station, and is housed in the former waiting room, a brick built structure with a self-supporting canopy.

Stogumber Station
Stogumber Station is unusual in that the main building is on one side of the track and the platform is on the other. Where once stood a large goods shed and cattle pens, are now the most wonderful gardens, lawns and shrubs – a great place for a picnic or meditation… In recent years the Cattle Dock has been restored with help from the WSRA and information boards document the work.
Stogumber Station is now known for its friendly group of volunteers, pretty garden and famous cream teas.
The Friends of Stogumber Station (FOSS) are a team of volunteers who work hard to maintain the station and gardens and deliver a delightful customer experience.

Crowcombe Heathfield Station
Crowcombe Heathfield station stands at the highest point on the West Somerset Railway, just under 400 feet above the sea.
The station was built in 1862 when the line opened. The main station building is the only original structure left, although the nearby cottages and station masters house (not now Railway-owned) are from the same date. Today’s layout consists of two platforms, each extended over the years – look for the different materials used – with the main offices on the up side, and two ‘new’ buildings on the down side.
The visual charm of the station and surroundings has caught the eye of several TV and film directors leading to scenes being shot at Crowcombe Heathfield for ‘The Flockton Flyer’, ‘The Lion,The Witch and the Wardrobe’, ‘Land Girls’ and The Beatles ‘A Hard Day’s Night’.
A dedicated group of volunteers work at Stogumber station, maintaining the grounds and gardens and offering refreshments to passengers waiting for the next train.
